Namibia has a large footprint but a relatively small population of about 2.6 million people. Namibia is an upper middle-income country with well-developed infrastructure; yet it imports approximately 70% of its electricity from South Africa and Zimbabwe. Namibia’s energy security is adversely affected by these difficulties.

As part of this effort Nampower, the national power utility, has issued a request for bidders to build, own and operate a 20 MW photovoltaic power plant (projected to cost approximately $USD 26 million) for a period of 25 years. ApriSolar is developing a bid for the project which is currently due on February 14, 2020.

ApriSolar has agreed to a Joint Venture (JV) with two Namibian companies that are well equipped to understand local considerations, evaluate the competition, and provide some of the construction, operating and maintenance functions which help satisfy local content requirements.
